Choosing Next President of India: Why This Narrow-Mindedness ?

Former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Can anybody be made President of India ? How important is the post  of  President of  India ?  Is this the right way we choose our President ?  Is  it just a ceremonial post and a rubber stamp ?  Why there is so much debate and controversy whenever time for the presidential election ( or selection ) approaches every 5 years?  If the king has no power and bound  to act as per advice of  his Prime Minister, does not it liken to kingdom of blind king Dhritarashtra  of  the Mahabharata ?   Do we need amendment of our constitution  in this matter ?

It depends ! Answer is both yes and no ! ...read the >> Full Story

Shameful & Unfortunate Incident

Manipur is a beautiful, hilly provincial state of India.  Its people easy-going, fun-loving, hard-working and very athletic.   Ethnic violence has however disturbed peace nowadays.  Strikes or bandhs, protests, destruction of government properties are order of the day.  To make things even worse and more complicated, security forces are often accused of fake encounter killings, torture, rape and other human rights violations.   Imposition of controversial AFSPA ( armed forces special powers act ) in the State has resulted in loss of hundreds of innocent lives.

Unable to bear such atrocities, Manipuri women went to the extent of "naked protest" against the security forces.  Hundreds of completely naked women aged around 50  gathered to protest  in front of HQ of security forces there in full public view. ( see pix below ).

Such type protests are unheard of and unseen before anywhere in India or may be in the entire world.

May be widespread incidents of atrocities against women in the state has become too intolerable for them.

An update:  ( 31 March, 2012 )
At last, there is some  hope for restoration of dignity of  the people of  the north-eastern states, especially Manipur, and Kashmir.   The United Nations (UN) has asked India to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).  Whether the Government of India acts on it or not is another question, but the fact will remain on record  forever that the prominent world forum  condemned this kind of  injustice towards its own people in the land of Mahatma.  It says such law has no role to play in a democracy. It is almost like a heavy slap on the face of  India which pride itself to be a  great  upholder of democratic values in the world.
