N Kunjarani Devi ~ Indian woman athlete par excellence
Date of birth : 1 March 1968 ( Manipur, India )
People loves rags to riches story. A boy from urban India playing for Indian cricket team and chattering some Hinglish words at post-match presentation ceremony on being adjudged man-of-the-match in only an ordinary bi-lateral competition should never be more inspiring and important than a boy or girl, hailing from far & remote village or hilly region of India, flashing a gold medal he or she has just won for the country in a world competition.
Because the said cricketer boy had all the advantages from the beginning. Since he grew in big city urban area, he had access to good sports ground and top class sports gears, he had top trainers to train him, he could see top players play from close distance to learn and emulate them, and because of English-medium schooling he could learn quickly what's happening around the world in that particular sport...
But this tiny Manipuri girl N Kunjarani Devi had no such advantages from the beginning. It is an irony that remote, hilly, strife-torn, under-looked, small state of Manipur would make India proud time and again in sports save cricket. Manipur has always been sporting powerhouse in India. This small state has produced a bevy of more outstanding sportspersons for India than other bigger states. This despite having no proper sporting facilities which are available with bigger states like UP, MP, Punjab, Kerala, TN, WB etc.
N Kunjarani Devi is a weightlifter. She has probably won more international medals for India than any other athlete. At World Championships, she has won a total of 21 medals during her career.
This iron lady from Manipur was honoured with Arjuna Award in 1990 and Rajib Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1996 by the government of India.
She is serving as an assistant commandant in the Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF).
Her life should inspire other aspiring sports persons in remote villages and disadvantaged regions in India to fight all odds to become famous and rich. Her life teaches that it is possible.
