Maa Anandamayee

.
Anandamayee Maa ~ the blissful mother
Real name: Nirmala
Born: In 1896 in East Bengal ( now Bangladesh )
Father: Bipin Bihari Bhattacharya
Mother : Moksada Sundari Devi

One of the most revered spiritual gurus in India, Anandamayee Maa's life story is full  of surprising incidents. Like she had never slept with her husband ( she would often faint or her body would stiffen when thought of sexuality occurred in her husband's mind) . Her husband later took religious initiation from her and accepted her as his guru.  She would shed profuse tears without reasons, laugh for hours, talk at tremendous speed in unknown languages, roll in the dust and dance like a whirling leaf in the wind. In Dehradun in a Shiva temple she lived alone for over a year without food at freezing temperatures.   Using her siddhi or yogic powers, she could read a devotee's thoughts and emotions at a distance.

Wherever Anandamayee Maa went, thousands of people followed her. Such was her charm and attraction.  Her unusually simple way of teaching and occasional yogic acts were hard  to ignore.  Smt. Indira Gandhi, late Indian Prime Minister, visited Maa with her whole family in Dehradun in July, 1982.  Maa Anandamayiee met Mahatma Gandhi on several occasions. She used to call him 'Pitaji' ( father). Mahatma called her 'bacchi' ( my small loving child).

There are countless Ashrams and  institutions all over India and abroad in Maa Anandamayee's name.
In Maa Anandamayee's own hand-writing

Maa's hand writing in Bengali( above)
" Strive for being good. This mercy I beg of you all"
Maa left her mortal body on 27th August, 1982, in Dehradun at about 8 pm. The then Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi arrived at noon as Maa's divine body was given Maha Samadhi at about 1.30 pm near the previous site of an ancient Pipal tree, under which she used to sit on many occasions and give darshan to her devotees.
